An Announcement

If any of you have visited the Reading Rockets home page (http://www.readingrockets.org) recently, you’ll have noticed that we’ve launched a five part television series called Reading Rockets: Launching Young Readers, that is currently airing on public television stations around the country. Hosted by Fred Rogers, Annette Bening, Vivica A. Fox, Deborah Norville, and Frank McCourt, the programs were filmed in schools, childcare centers, libraries, research centers, and homes around the country. The series looks at different reading strategies that are helping young children learn to read, features practical advice for parents, highlights the best research-based reading strategies, and interweaves the personal stories of children learning to read.

In conjunction with the series, we’ve also created a new PBS web site that provides parents with easy information on how children learn to read. Send a free e-card with artwork by famous children’s book authors and illustrators to tell a kid “I can’t wait to read with you again.” Or print out the parent tips on what you can do to help a child become a reader. The web site also features an overview of the stages of reading and interviews with some of the nation’s top reading experts.

The Reading Rockets: Launching Young Readers web site can be found at http://www.pbs.org/launchingreaders/. Check it out!

Just visited the site and am really anticipating watching the series. Any idea when it will be broadcast in the Augusta, GA area? Have contacted our PBS station but haven’t received response as yet.

So far, the only information we have from Georgia is that it will be airing on GPTV on Saturdays at 5:00 am December 14 through January 11. We’re continually updating our series page (http://www.readingrockets.org/series.php) with current broadcasting information, so if your local station isn’t listed, keep checking back!
