Does anyone know of any good alphabet books? I cannot seem to find any that do not have at least one glaring incorrect representation of a letter/sound.
For example, some use “owl” for “o” or “orange” for “o.” I even saw “urchin” for “u” in one book.
Just wondering.
Thanks,
Margo
Re: Alphabet books
I know when we did the K-12 reading program that was a real issue. I don’t remember whether or not we prevailed with not using “elephant” for E (and we had lots of discussion over whether “egg” was good enough, because of the tendency to turn the ‘e’ sound into an ‘a’ sound). I also don’t think there’s an “alphabet book” to accompany it…
Try http://www.auburn.edu/~murraba for some good representative words — and make your own. We Have The Technology :-)
Hard to find, but very good if you can get them:
OLD Ladybird abc (not listedn on catalogues as alphabet book, but lower-case abc)
Ladybird Sunbird abc ar alphabet book — a real gem with beautiful African pictures.
Both of these have accurate sounds and nice clear lower-case letters without distractors.
If you can find two copies of the Sunbird, I’ll buy one from you — mine got “borrowed” …
