I know I’ve seen this information on this bulletin board before, but I need some specific information on it. Has anyone used it consistently? What are the pros/cons about it? Do you think that the authors’ claims and opinions are valid, and/or have you personally seen examples of them? What are your opinions about it? Thanks for your help!
Re: Reading Reflex
Hi Jenn,
There are many parents on the board who can give you specific examples and testimonials about Reading Reflex, and I’ve asked for similar information in the past. I can tell you from what a number of parents shared with me that teaching this program to your own child can be quite difficult, for a lot of reasons, and almost never is accomplished as quickly as the authors say it can be done. That’s my biggest criticism of the method, by the way, because I feel parents should not go into something like this with an unrealistic expectation that this will cure their child’s reading problem in a matter of weeks. Think in months, perhaps a year, and then you’ll be more likely to be pleasantly surprised at the genuine progress they make, rather than impatient, disappointed, etc.
Mastering the program itself is a major undertaking for many parents especially if their own educational experiences were lacking; and then there’s the emotional minefield you enter when trying to teach or tutor your own children, especially in an area of academic weakness or genuine disability. Many kids are quite defensive and oppositional, have power struggle issues with their parents etc. and that’s why so many parents would rather hire someone else, preferably a well-trained and experienced educational therapist, to work with their child. As a single mother myself, I had a close friend who was a teacher tutor my son, and traded piano lessons for her daughter, which worked out great for both of us. Similarly, I have traded my educational therapy services for the daughter of another friend, for babysitting services with her nanny for my little one. If you’re creative and determined, you can find a way to make it work! Good luck to you!

Greetings Jenn,You may want to post your question on the Parenting LD board as I know some LD teachers (Shay for example) frequent that board and use Phono-Graphix in their classroom. Phono-Graphix is the actual name of the reading program and it is outlined in the book entitled Reading Reflex. People use these names interchangeably when referring to this reading program. As a homeschooling parent, I used PG with my then 12yo daughter. I am very impressed with the program and believe it should be the first reading program of choice even though my daughter was unable to complete it. Their approach really clicked with her up until multi-syllable management of 3 or more syllables. At that time, it was determined my dd also has visual processing disorder in addition to CAPD. Consequently, we are now doing Master the Code which is the follow-up reading program to PACE. MTC has very similar components to PG and LMB but it has a more intense and systematic approach. MTC forces automaticity which has greatly benefitied my dd. She had an “a-ha” moment last week in which she exclaimed delightedly, “I’m finally beginning to get it!” I really do like the PG reading method which appears to reach more students than phonics or whole language or a combo of those two. However, there will always be children who need something more.Blessings, momoI know I’ve seen this information on this bulletin board before, but
