Does anyone have, or know where I can find, an article or research supporting LindamoodBell and their techniques. I am trying to build some consensus at my son’s school for the idea of pulling him out for a few weeks, and I find the LMB website not that impressive. I want to give some information to his teacher about the program.. … Thanks!
Re: Looking for Objective info. on lindamood bell
You can call the Lindamood-Bell center that you are thinking of sending him to and ask for an information visit. This way you can sit down with someone there and talk with them about the programs and they would be able to direct you to where to get research information. Lindamood-Bell’s first program was written in the 70’s and they became a corportation in the 80’s. They are research based and if you look online at that website you can find information about the research they have done and are currently working on. If you are looking for statistics you can ask Lindamood-Bell to send you and information packet they have clinical statistics in these packets of information. Drop me an e-mail if you need any more information!
Re: Looking for Objective info. on lindamood bell
The eric clearinghouse has some summaries of reading research. It doesn’t discuss specific programs but rather discusses what has been proven to work. I think you will find that phonemic awareness based programs are supported in this research. Then you can show the lindamood bell is a phonemic awareness based program.

Then go to the eric clearinghouse section.
Re: Looking for Objective info. on lindamood bell
PBS ran a series sometime last year about the human brain at various periods throughout life, beginning with infancy, early childhood, adolescence, etc. I can’t remember the name of it but I taped it for someone and can look it up if you think it’s something you’d like to show someone from your school.
During the section on childhood, an 8 year old boy was featured. I believe they said he was dyslexic. They showed a brain scan (maybe a PET scan, don’t remember) where they asked him some questions. I think they were mostly spelling questions where he had to finish spelling some words. He couldn’t do it. The regions of his brain that should control this activity weren’t lighting up.
They mentioned that he then attended a LMB regional center for two or three weeks (sorry I’m not sure exactly but it wasn’t any longer than 3 weeks - my brain has a faulty memory), after which they retested him. Not only was he ABLE to do the work he couldn’t do a couple weeks prior, but the proper regions of his brain were lighting up. The conclusion for the purpose of this tv program was that certain regions of the human brain CAN be taught through intensive therapy to become activated. Up till that point, they weren’t sure whether or not the correct region of the brain would work or whether the work would be done by a different region of the brain picking up the slack, so to speak.
Of course I’m sure the LMB people were very happy about this study because it validated their program.
Dr. Joseph Torgesen. He did a very nice longitudinal study and it has been written up in a peer refereed journal or two.
There are others—he comes to mind first because he is a very respected researcher.
