Extentions to Phono-Graphix

If you buy the “Wordwork Book”, a book for the classroom, there are many extensions that are not in the RR book. Remember that RR was published for parents to teach their child to read. Email me directly and I will try to help. I have just bought a house and have been very busy, so those people waiting for a response from me, please be patient. I haven’t recovered from the shock of a thirty year mortgage!

Congratulations on the new home Shay. Sure a 30 year mortgage may be a shock but it is nice to know that the home is “yours” and you can do with it what you want. My hubby and I are in our first home after years of living in base housing. We went really radical and painted our kitchen purple. It was time to think outside the box. Congrats again and hope you enjoy your new home.

Oh Seth, yes, you would love Word Work! It has all the reproducible sheets for reinforcement plus it is really laid out well with many teaching suggestions. It is very well worth the $175.

And I say GOOD FOR YOU that you are smart enough to use an effective method when everyone else is in the dark! I’m probably the only one in my whole district who knows about PG. I try to tell people about it, but no one apparently cares enough to come take a real look at it. Too bad for them!!!

We got “Reading Recovery” for our son in the first grade -WHAT A DISASTER - 4 years later and he is still guessing (sometimes, but still…). No matter how many times did we ask- why do you encourage him to guess instead of reading- we were told it is OK.
The “Reading Reflex” was not published then and we being foreign had no idea that there is some order in English….

Not so much an extension — but there are lots and lots of other general pattenrs in the language that can be taught. One is that when the verb of a word that gets a -sion or -tion ends in d or de or s or se, it’s ‘way more likely to end in -sion than tion. (collide- collision, divide — division, tense — tension, extend — extension :-))

I’m going to have to wait until my next pay check, but I am going to get it. $175 is nothing compared to the money I wasted taking reading classes for my degree in Special Ed. My reading professors were whole language gurus.

Good for you, Seth! It is very worth it to have good materials. I had to buy mine, too. But that may be the best investemnt you ever make in your teaching career. I only wish it had been around a long time ago!

I noticed your post and your comment regarding your district placing a lot of emphasis on sight words. The school district in my area also focuses strongly on sight words, so I introduce them as they would be introduced in Phono-Graphix. I am still teaching the children the sight words, but in a manner that works with Phono-Graphix and its success.
