How to get past Harry Potter?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Help - I need some ideas on interesting books for a 12 yr. boy in 6th grade who reads at a 9th/10th+ grade level, but comprehends on 7th grade. We’ve run out of books at home to read and he just wants to read Harry Potter series over and over.

Need some ideas on books that would hold his interest again vs. just Harry Potter.

The “Artemis Fowl” series. I don’t have the author handy but can post if you cannot find it. Also by a British author. Not about magic, but very clever

Many gifted kids like Dahl as an author. Maniac Magee is a pretty good book. Since he likes fantasy, he could also look at C.S. Lewis’ works - Lion, Witch, Wardrobe, etc.

Lloyd Alexander’s _The BOok of Three_ is almost a guaranteed winner :)

Sir MacHinery by Tom McGowen is one of my all-time favorites.

http://www.multcolib.org/kids/harrypotter.html lists a whole bunch of possibilities.

What does he like about the Harry Potter series? (Artemis Fowl is a little too James BOnd-esque and hard-boiled for my taste)

If he really likes the fantasy element then he may like Philip Pullman’s series; if he likes the “legend” aspects I’d toss Mary Stewart’s Merlin books (The Crystal Cave, the Hollow HIlls, etc) at him.
