I am a resource specialist in an elementary school in California. I am looking for a good, simple screening test for various processing problems (auditory, visual, memory, etc.).
When I do an initial screening on a child (pre-referral to special education) I have good screening tools for determining academic levels, but I don’t have a simple test for screening for processing problems. I use a few subtests from the Brigance right now, but I bet there is something better out there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Re: Screening Tool For Processing
PACE has a really good and accurate assessment. I don’t know if there is any way to just buy the assessment tool from them, but it might be worth finding out. Here is their website: http://www.mentalskills.com/ (I don’t particularly like the marketing tone of the website, but I’ve found the program and the assessment to be very solid.)
Re: Screening Tool For Processing
At our school, the psychologist is responsible for doing the processing portion of the screening, but I like to do a little of my own, to supplement it. I use the LAC for auditory processing (from Lindamood Bell www.lblp.com) and the Beery Visual Motor Inventory, because they are both pretty quick and accurate. There are some subtests on the WJR cognitive portion that are helpful also, like sound blending for auditory and visual-auditory memory tests both. That’s an expensive test to buy, though, if you don’t already have it. I like the PACE processing tests also, but don’t know if you can get it without signing up for the program… they score everything through their website. Might be worth talking to them about it though!
There is a new test out that tests both phonemic processing and rapid naming (a skill of executive function and memory) called the CTOPP, costs around $200 but is very useful, so you might consider getting that if you have a budget, or see if your school or district can get a copy from the publisher for free. It’s published by PRO-Ed (800) 897-3202.
Hope this helps!

If I could have some information regarding this topic it would help me too. I am an education resource teacher too and am looking for the same info as this person. I would appreciate some help in this area as well.
Thank you,
Karen
