Hi everyone! Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday! Well, we made it but every one of my muscles are sore and I feel like I am a walking dead person! I really don’t even have a lot of boxes sitting around. Now, we are getting a beautiful snow storm and we hope to be snowed in. We moved to a ranch cabin in the West Virginia mountains. I just love it and I am glad that I have a winter break to continue to move in. Ken, I hope that you are feeling better and I wish for you to have a healthy new year. If any of you have emailed me within the past five days, I will return your mail later. We have so much email, that it freezes up our computer! Have a safe and happy holiday everyone!
Re: Exhausted but in my new home
Congratulations!
From a parallel universe …
My assistants are putting in almost the last of the insulation in my handyman’s special today, and tomorrow we get a truck and go empty out the storage space and try to find my ski clothes before the winter ends.
We discovered tongue-and-groove pine, painted hot pink and green, under the cheap panelling in two rooms. I’ll be stripping paint for the foreseeable future.
We hit -15 degrees Celcius, ie -4 Fahrenheit, the week before Christmas. So far we’ve had a foot of snow one week, a cold snap the next, thaws and refreezing ice, and high winds. The handyman’s special and new insulation and emergency electric heaters are so far holding up to it.
So, tell us about how things are going down there!
Re: Almost Heaven!!
I live in Charles Town which is close to Harpers Ferry. We had a beautiful snow yesterday but it is almost melted today. They really do take good care of our roads; they had two ploughs yesterday, one ploughing the snow and the other putting down chemicals to melt the snow so that it wouldn’t ice up. I just love it here, quiet, oh so quiet. It will be just wonderful coming home from a busy day at school and tutoring every night. I should be totally moved in by the time that school starts next week. I have five cats and they are getting used to it pretty well and noone seems to want to go out. Two of them are inside/ outside kitties but maybe they will just stay in. We just got the fifth one. a 7 month old, three weeks ago. She was going to have to go to the humane society because her folks had to move. I was afraid that she would be put down; noone wants cats, too many of them. We have a king size water bed and we all finally fit on it. We also have a jacuzzi in the master bathroom and I just got out of it. It is on a timer and heats up to 100 degrees by 6:00 every night. With it and the water bed, we don’t even have to heat the bedroom. I truly love it here! Wish that all of you could join me. Seriously, if any of you are in the area, let me know and come visit, as long as you like cats. Last night, there was a cat in the back yard and one on my porch! I guess that they knew that we were coming. I put food out for them tonight.
Re: Almost Heaven!!
Ah what a nice gesture feeding those poor kitties. We have four cats here and I thought that was alot. Glad things are going well Shay. Take care and God Bless.
It is nice to hear that good things happen to good people.
My sister always tells me that when you do things for others you get it back 100 times over in different ways. Shay, you give so much with your dedication to your students and your help for so many others on these boards.
Re: Exhausted but in my new home
I just took over 100 years of paint from my antique piano. That “peel away” works wonders.
It is good to hear that you are well despite the rough conditions. I am pulling out the ski clothes today for a trip this weekend. My son can’t wait!
Re: Exhausted but in my new home
Hi, Shay!
Merry Christmas to you, too! We surely have missed you around here! But we are jealous of you moving to the mountains! We actually have a lot in the NC mountains. Maybe someday!
Are you commuting to your former job or are you working in WV now? I don’t have a map handy but I can hardly imagine living in WV and commuting to Fairfax, but maybe it’s possible.
I turned in my PG test because you were in the midst of moving, so I don’t know if I passed or not! I probably won’t announce it here if I didn’t! Lol!

Re: Exhausted but in my new home
I’m sure that you did just fine Janis. I don’t have access to the test that they give out to interns, only the test that they give for the 35 hour course. Sorry I wasn’t there to help but as you know, I have been busy. It was only 45 days from getting approved from a mortgage company and closing. It was sure hard to work. I work in Loudoun County which is a little closer to me than when I did work in Fairfax. I still work there, can’t afford to live there. Our realitor told us that they are going to start four new housing developments in Charles Town, one with 3200 homes! People from Fairfax moved to Loudoun County due to the expense, now they are moving to WV, for the same reason! I was told that our property would double in just five years due to the expansion. Better than the stock market, huh?
Re: Exhausted but in my new home
Better than the stock market? I’d say so!!! Maybe we should buy a house up there and sell it in five years and use the profit to help build our mountain house!
Guess what? I got my email from Read America this morning telling me I had passed the test! Great! Now all I need is more time in my day to study the manual so I can practice using it. I have almost no planning time this year.
Enjoy that new home and beautiful view!
Janis
Re: Exhausted but in my new home
Congratulations on passing your test, I knew that you would do fine. Time is such an issue isn’t it? I have to find time to write my progress reports this week. They are so over due but I called all of my parents to tell them that they would be. I just couldn’t find time to do my paper work, teach and buy a house at the same time over the past 45 days! They said that they understood, thank heavens! Again, congradulations!
Re: Exhausted but in my new home
I don’t often get the chance to log on, especially this past year, but I always enjoy reading the messages posted. I live in England, about 20 mins from the sea and an hour from the Lake District. We rarely get snow, but make the most of it when we do … it’s usually a freak of nature when it arrives! I am a teacher who has just resigned my post with an acrimonious split from my employer. A years worth of stress related illness caused by bad management. I have 16 years worth of special needs teaching here, so if I can throw a new light on anything from an English perspective, please e-mail me and I’ll do my best. Happy and prosperous new year to you all!
Congratulations Shay. Hope you and your family have a safe and joyous holiday season.
