Using V/V

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a student who I think would really benefit from the very structured V/V program (I’ve tried other visualization tasks with him, with little success). I purchased the materials. I KNOW the LMB people say you can’t teach it without taking their course, and I’d love to take one, but they’re not offered anywhere near me (plane trip required—not in the budget now, I’m afraid). I’ll certainly take one when it’s in reasonable driving range—I’m even willing to go four hours or so. But has anyone else done this program without the official training? The family is not in the position to take on an outside tutor, say nothing of a trip to a LMB clinic (actually not too far away) for intensive tutoring. Has anyone else done this? Any advice?

I haven’t personally done it, but I know many people (including parents) have successfully done V&V just using the book.

I took the training but it really isn’t necessary. The manual is VERY user-friendly. I really think that both V/V and Seeing Stars can be easily learned simply by reading the manuals. The training course itself doesn’t offer up anything new - it just goes through each section step by step.

Go for it. I’m sure you won’t find it difficult.

Paul,

I would also mention that there are V/V training video tapes.

Just adding my name to the list of those who’ve done this w/out the V & V course. I’ve had LiPS training, but found this pretty easy to just follow. You should give it a try!

It is definitely a no-brainer..you can do VV on your own….but I have been trained in VV by Paul Worthington and Lips/seeing stars by Phyllis Lindamood, however, the only problem I can see is you have to make sure that you don’t move to slow or too fast and that the child is really visualizing and not just parroting words and phrases back to you…:-)

I use V/V in both my tutoring business and in a small group setting at school for high schoolers. I have just been hired to teach an older adult because it is his dream to be able to remember print. I have been trained on it but you don’t have to be to be able to do the program. It is a wonderful program and if you want to do it and I can be of any help, please email me directly.

Thanks for the encouragement! I thought it seemed fairly simple to do. I’m wondering: I only see this child once a week. Is that enough for this program? It seems as though it will progress slowly. I might try for argue for an additional time with this child.

I only see my students usually once a week except in the summer; I offer intensives. By the way, kids with visualization problems usually have problems writing as well; may I recommend the writing program Step Up to Writing along with the computer program Inspiration. They work wonders after V/V.
