Please read Brenda’s post below called Reading Milestones. Then the one above it about tutoring is associated. Her son is reading at 2nd grade level at age 14 and the school is using a sight word program to teach him to read. Obviously we know what he needs but she needs someone to help her at the next IEP meeting. This child needs something this school can’t provide and she will need help forcing them to pay for LD school or a private tutor.
Thanks,
Janis
Re: No can do..
Sorry, Patti. I did not mean for that to sound like I wanted you to personally go help her. I know you are very busy. I just figured you’d know either an advocacy group or reading tutor. I did think of giving her Susan Barton’s site as a matter of fact. Thanks for mentioning it.

Re: No can do..
Hi patti, this is Brenda and I am desperate for an advocate to help me and my son. If I contact Susan Barton of Bright Solutions, can I tell her that you refered me?
I’m affraid that when I call I’ll be put on a list and called back in 2 months. :( I know I’m probably not being fair, but I’m desperate. My son’s IEP meeting in on the 27th of this month and I have no idea how to handle it. If we don’t get help soon, he’ll be another statistic…..I can’t let that happen. :(
If you have any advise for me, please email me at [email protected]
Re: No can do..
Brenda,
Susan is a reading specialist. You need to look at the Wright’s Law site and that reference someone gave you in Fresno to find the advocate. Work on the advocate first and then after more testing, the school or tutoring can be determined. But here are Susan’s links for you to save:

I live in Southern California and inbetween gradschool I am SWAMPED. She needs an advocate. Have her contact Susan Barton of Bright Solutions for dyslexia in San Jose. She does lots of trainings for teaching reading in this Northern CA area…She has a website and is very active in the San Francisco, Sacramento Area. I bet she can find this woman a tutor for her son..
I “hear” you on the Reading Milestones…AARGH!!
