Does anyone have any experience with this reading program? Thanks
Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
I have used Stevenson for many years as PART of my reading program in an elementary resource room. I have had some good success with it and many of my students do seem to transfer their pattern knowledge to other reading. It does have it’s drawbacks. I have used it with a middle school student and had amazing results. I also used it with an adult literacy student and it seemed to help him more than anything else I tried.
We are trying to new direct instruction SRA Horizons program next year.
Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
My son used it and it was a major disaster. I taught him using PG and when a new resource teacher came on board, my son was the only one of the entire classs who could read.
I wrote many letters to the school about all the reasons why it was such a poor choice for him.

Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
Thanks,The reason I was asking is because my 14yr.old has been using it for years and the teachers always tell me not to worry that by the time he gets thru it he will read fluently. (well I am worried) I have started with PG and am working with him in the advanced code 2 to 3 times a week for 45min.to an hour each session. My son needs to be able to read.He has very low self esteem and tells me he is afraid someone will find out he is stupid.(sad).
Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
I would never use Stevenson exclusively but rather to teach word attack patterns. It is not good at all for comprehension strategies despite what they say in their inservices.
Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
Well, I really dislike Stevenson, as did my son. PG is a much better program. I took my son out of school for the second half of second grade when Stevenson was all they would offer him. When I told the district representative that he had not learned to read using Stevenson last year so why were they going to use it this year, I was told the teacher had not used it properly. Bureaucracy: when you fail the first time, do the same thing again.
I felt vindicated the next year when the new resource teacher told me that my son was the only one in her resource class who could actually read.

Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
My school system also uses Stevenson, when they use a program. For my daughter who has some memory issues, I found it gave her more to remember. It seems confusing to her, and me too! She no longer does this program.
Does anyone know if this program meets the new push for researched bases and proven to be effective programs?
Re: Stevenson Reading Program?
My son also has memory issues and it does have one more layer of things to remember. My district used this as their multi-sensory program to implement his IEP. It certainly isn’t an OG program though.

I have. Found that my students didn’t transfer it to general reading. Some good aspects though.
