Help choosing tutoring- Wilson? Phono-graphix? Great Leaps?

Hello-
Some of you replied to my post about interpreting my 11-yo daughter’s test scores- thank you!- and my guess is that the school team will find there’s not an identifiable learning disability - but she still needs help to get up to grade level in reading and become fluent. Her comprehension scores were OK but decoding and spelling were the problem areas (3rd grade and 2nd grade level on the achievement tests). I want to get going on something right away rather than have more time lost to institutional inertia (despite the teachers’ and administrators best intentions…), so am looking at options of (1) using the local Sylvan center, (2) using a tutor certified in Wilson reading, (3) using a Phono-graphix tutor, if I can find one nearby, (4) learning to do Phono-graphix myself, of (5) learning to do Great Leaps myself.
Any advice on these various approaches??? It is confusing for someone new to reading difficulties to sort all this out!

Your needs are closest to PG or another good system such as OG-based or the similar programs I use myself. (outline available on request.) Wilson gets mixed reports especially with younger kids. GL is aimed at speed and is not a decoding system so doesn’t meet your needs. Sylvan is in general disrecommended; most often just filling in more and more worksheets, and doesn’t in general teach systematic decoding. You can do the work yourself or hire a tutor to teach the material you need.

Hi Sue,
Phono-Graphix is very easy to present. Your daughter won’t need many hours to remediate. What you need to do is go buy the book Reading Reflex and read the first two chapters and email me personally and I will help you.

I haven’t replied in years due to the “selling” of one service over another, but I can tell you that the Wilson program, does get rewarding results. My son was the same age as your daughter, and had the LMB. Next, the Wilson program is what gave him results that corrected his spelling and fluency issues. I would highly suggest Wilson if you have a trained tutor available. Barbara Wilson’s OG background really comes through in the program.
