I am very interested in Phono-graphix but I don’t know anyone here in my state of Arizona using it. I have been a mission to find a better reading program than Reading Mastery & Reading Milestones for my SLD intermediate kiddos. I think PG is my best option. I’m not trained and only have the book. I did join the readnow yahoo group and have printed off many posts which look good.

Question: I want to get my special ed director interested in the program and possibly get a trainer our here in the sunny southwest. Any advise on how to convince the special ed director of PG. I’m sure many a teacher has come into the office saying we gotta try this or we gotta try that. I know there is a website but most of the websites look good. I need to be

What’s the best way to get it going? I know many of you have been in my postition. What works…..what should I avoid?

The journal of the International Dyslexia Association printed an article on research done by the McGuinnesses with PG. It is a very good article. My special ed. director did not seem to be very interested and would not pay for my training, so I went on my own. I’d just encourage you to do it regardless. I spent years with ineffective reading programs like Reading Milestones not knowing any better and can honestly say that there is no point in teaching at all if we do not have tools that will benefit the children. If you can’t get the training, then teach yourself with the book. You can get lots of support from people like Shay who are real pros at it. Good luck!

Hi Michelle,
I wish you were my son’s teacher! As far as being trained for this program, I don’t think that’s necessary. I used it with my son and found it quite easy. As with anything, you’ll improve over time and figure out more effective ways to organize and teach it within your classroom.

Good luck to you! I’m sure Shay and the other teachers here will offer you useful advice in implementing PG.
