Brand new teacher...would love some help

I am BRAND new teacher, 6th and 8th grade ICS for language arts. the reg ed teacher is going to be covering the Odessey. Does anyone have any ideas where I could find classics written at a lower reading level? I really want my kids to understand what is happening in the class………would appreciate any help!

Jackie, I can’t help you find the classics but as a new teacher you might consider looking at this siteat.http://trackstar.scrtec.org/ to give you more ideas on your unit. I was WOWed by all the cool stuff here.

Go to key word and type in anything you are studying. You won’t believe the neat stuff you will find to help you with any unit. I did a quick search and they have some stuff on the Odessey. I didn’t see if it was any good but it is worth a look. Let me know if you like it.

I read the real classics to my classes. Remember those works dummied down were not written by the great writers, they were primarily written by hacks. I’ve had no problem in my career reading Hemmingway, Poe, Stevenson, Crane, etc. to learning disabled (50% minority) students from small towns in North Florida.

There is a world of wonderful short stories available. Ken Campbell
