I am wondering if anyone has used the Davis method for dyslexics, I am having my son Hunter tested for dyslexia on March 20th, I have been advised to read the book The Gift of Dyslexia and it gives a description of the Davis method and how in 1 week it can drastically improve your child’s reading ability, I need to know if anyone has had any results with this method. Thanks Teresa
Re: Davis Method for Dyslexics
The learning clinic that my son attended felt that he had the type of disorientation the Davis describes. They taught my son to hold his mind’s eye still and worked on trigger words. At the time, age 9, I think, he actually felt sick to his stomach trying to hold his mind’s eye still. The clinic went slowly. I did not see much improvement at the time and I knew he was having trouble with the exercises. He is now 15 and his reading has improved. He says there is not movement on the page as there was at an earlier age. He still struggles to read anything hard or lengthy, but he has improved. I guess I think things are often worth a try. The clinic he went to did many types of programs, so it was not just one method. I thing it is taking lots of little steps in many areas that has helped my son.
Teresa- I have a son who is dyslexic and I love the book you mentioned because of the positive perspective it offers. I did not use any of his actual methods, altho I tried to incorporate visual and tactile clues into his learning.
If he is being tested by the school district (or whoever)- be sure they run a full battery of tests— ie. all parts of the WISC or whatever intelligence test they use.
good luck!
