Phonics resources for 7th grader?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Please help me. I am going to start tutoring a 7th grader who is in dire need of reading instruction esp in phonics. I don’t want to give him anything “dumbed” down. Are there any basic phonics resources, books etc. that are available at my local school supply or B&N that might help and not be too 2nd gradish? Any help or advice appreciated! I was a resource teacher before becoming a sahmom but not my brain has turned to mush and I need to get it working again!

The Wilson Language Program is excellent to use with older students. It teaches phonemes through word lists, sentence and short story readings. Also included are dictation lessons, rules book to create for phonemic rules, etc. I use it in my Resource Room with 5th and 6th graders who enter reading at a first - third grade level. You can find the web site by typing in the name in a search engine.

I have remediated older students very successfully using the approach explained in the book “Reading Reflex”. I would recommend getting that book at a local bookstore (under $20) and then ordering the company’s $39 parent support manual for advanced code from the website (www.readamerica.net). The support manual is very helpful for working through advanced code systematically and would not be at all insulting to a 7th grader.

This approach works much faster than traditional phonics and is easy to learn and use.

Thanks to both of you. I will check those both out at my library (?) or bookstore. I did a search online and found a couple useful informal reading assessment tools. But was also looking for assessments for “higher” phonetic skills. I think my 7th grader is on about a 3rd grade level (parents say). This is what I found. May be useful to someone. Was a VERY good resource to print out (esp for sp. ed or K-1 teachers), though about 124 pages.

Check out Looking Glass Spelling at www.gwhizresources.com for a good program for older students who need help in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and reading. It’s based on Glass Analysis, a multisensory reading decoding program, so it improves reading and vocabulary as well as spelling. It teaches strategies for decoding and spelling using age-appropriate materials and vocabulary. The exercises are designed for older kids (no cutesy pictures). I use it with my 7th and 8th graders as well as with high school kids. You can see a sample of level one (there are 3 levels) on the website. My school (private school for LD students) uses it for our kids and we find that it really works. It’s easy-to-use for you and the student. Hope you like it.
