summer reading resource

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,
I have a 7-yr old son in first grade who is at the lower end of his class in reading level, but is strong in math. The school is currently evaluating him for ADD since he has trouble staying on task and he has been in a special reading class for about 20 minutes a day during school. At home, he practices reading everyday and we also do various skill-building worksheets sent home by the school. We are looking for a supplemental program to do over summer break. The school has recommended a literacy class they offer for two weeks and also provided me with a list of tutors. We tried the literacy class last year and were not pleased with the teacher, material or communications. We have inquired with a local Kumon Learning Center and are considering that as an option. Does anyone have any feedback regarding the Kumon reading program? Or, are there any other suggestions for summer reading help?

I only know Kumon by hearsay about their math, and the hearsay isn’t good; it’s extreme drill-and-kill.

If your son is very weak in phonics and if Kumon will drill him in phonics, that may help. Otherwise, keep asking questions.

I would recommend looking for a good private tutor and getting him one-to-one teaching in a good phonics-based, *plus* massed reading *plus* wtiting program — this is what works. If you were in my area, I’d discuss doing it myself — this is what I do.

I have a list of places to look for tutors — no guarantees, just places to start. I’ll try to remember to post it later; if not, email me.
