How to get someone to change reading method?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am considering applying for a job as a reading coach with a Reading First School.

Need advice on how to answer this question.

How would you handle a stituation where you have observed a teacher and the strategy she is using to teach reading is not appropreate according to the scientifc strategies? How would you handle the situation?

I guess I would start with a dialogue about how the teacher feels about her reading instruction methods. Does she feel her current methods are effective, teachable, would she be open to learning some of the new scientificly based instruction? If you find she is willing to learn some new things, can you offer her the support (time, materials, training) to really use what you are suggesting? Will she let you come in and share the teaching, observe you, let you try your methods on a small group. I think you need to sweeten the deal, so she sees the benefits of trying things your way. Just my quick thoughts, hope some of it might apply to your situation. Looks like this is an application or interview question. Coming in and telling someone else how to teach is always tricky. You want to be seen as a resource to help the teacher not someone who is just being critical.
