We use several texts that have a reading passage and comprehension questions. Those type of books provide a lot of practice and opportunities to teach vocabulary, locating material in the text and making inferences. But when the difficulty is more than reading skills, we use the Lindamood Visualizing and Verbalizing program. Some students have poor comprehension because they are not able to visualize what the text is telling them and they lack the verbal skills to explain what is important in the passage. V & V starts at a picture level and then goes to sentences and paragraphs. It is a program that requires a lot of one-to-one interaction between the student and the teacher.

Once you are sure the visualization piece is in place, Jamestown Education has a series of workbooks called the “Comprehension Skills Series” that works on understanding the main idea, making judgments, making inferences, drawing conclusions, etc. Each workbook is on one of those topics and consists of twenty passages and exercises. You can email for a Jamestown catalog, which has a couple of sample pages so you can see the layout. Your library might have some of these workbooks too. Cost is only $6.75 per workbook, but there are 10 different workbooks in the series (at 3 different reading levels — elementary, middle school, and high school).

JOanne Carlisle’s Reasoning and REading has some excellent exercises (and I use them as models and then invent a few billion more for practice); I”ve also got a fair amount of exercises & ideas int he reading comprehension section of www.resourceroom.net .
