inproving reading rate in H.S. students

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

HI- I am looking for some different strategies that will assist a student in improving her rate of reading. There are no other reading issues present. Currently, we are using strategies that include books on tape, timed reading/reading comprehension exercises, and reading aloud with the student. I have been searching and searching, but cannot find anything else. Any ideas or suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks-
Julie

When you have her read aloud, what happens? Is she going forward, steadily but slowly…? Or does she do things like skip words or misread them and hae to go back … or just has to go back a lot?

Hello,

Another stragety you can try is having her readly slowly and pernuancating her words aloud with assistance. Explain to her the words that she is trying to pronounce. In addition, have her write the words down that she is having the most difficulty with.

Another suggestion that I have is to try implementing flash cards in the lesson. The kind that has the word on one side and on the other side, it has a picture of the word. I do agree with Robin the ‘Great Leap’ is a great website, and will give you great strategies. Another game is the “Leap Frog.” Which the student has an electronic reading book and a electronic wand. If she has trouble pronouncing the word, she holds the wand under the word and the word is said out for her by the prerecorded electronic tape….
