Math computer software

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We read the article on the math software. We are wondering what types of software you have used or seen used.
We have used Math Blaster, The Logical Journey of the Zoombinies, Treasure Mountain, Number Munchers and Flashcards. Have you played any of these and if so what did you think?

We’ve played Number Munchers and we think it’s the bomb! Ha! No really, we enjoyed it thoroughly when we were in elementary school. I liked the sound effects! We think games are a marvelous way to incorporate mathematical concepts into the classroom. Many children are paralyzed by the stigma that mathematics carries. We know we were. I had a teacher tell me that GIRLS weren’t good at mathematics, but when he saw me play NUMBER MUNCHERS…he knew that he was wrong! Software is a very good and fun way to get children interested in mathematics!!! SEE YA!

As we are the before math computer software generation, our experience is somewhat limited. Personally (Marie), I have observed that students have difficulty transferring the processes from the game to pencil and paper. I (Martha) lived in Africa where we did not have computers.

Kids are losing the ability to interact with the textbook and their peers. Until the teacher and peers are no longer a vital part of the learning process (ala “1984” and “Brave New World”), games must be integrated with the learning process in math; not isolated as the only means of learning mathematical fundamentals.

My 11 yr old son likes the Math Blaster software, he is only on a third grade level and is having a hard time with regrouping subtraction. But he does enjoy how the program encorporates the video games with the learning.
