How can I assist my student with ADHD to stay on task and not disrupt other students within the regular ed. classroom?

Try getting hold of a book called Educational Care by Mel Levine. He has great suggestions in there for working with kids with many different LD. But I agree with the previous poster’s suggestions. ADHD require support from the teacher and he suggests good supports for helping the ADHD student to stay on task.

I researched an excellent source located on this site. Click on LD/ADD. Scroll down the page to In the Classroom. Click on Checklist for Teachers. There are many strategies listed that may provide you with keeping students on task, including other challenges in teaching students with ADHD. I have used several of these strategies in the classroom. It is essential that you check for clarity when giving instructions, make use of behavior modification constracts for on-task behavior, use incentives and positive reinforcement when you observe on-task behavior, present multisensory opportunities for learning, move around the classroom, decrease time in lecturing, structure lessons for small groups, prepare alternative assignments, and use computer technology. I have found that by allowing students to move around the classroom and assist in teaching activities to be very successful in keeping students on task. More information can be found in the book by Sandra F. Reif, The ADD/ADHD Checklist: An Easy Reference for Parents and Teachers, ISBN #013762395X, 1998.
