reading recommendations

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone recommend a relatively short novel, paperback that would be of interest to 11th-12th graders. I usually try to incorporate a novel that relates to the history that I teach. My 11th and 12th graders just finished reading “A Separate Peace” and “Anthem”. Can anyone suggest a book (reading levels vary from 4th grade to 12th grade) that would relate to World Cultures that you have found was enjoyed by this age group. Thank you for any suggestions.

Hmmm…. The Giver has been very popular w/ a wide range of students, tho’ it’s more about society in general than “world cultures,” since it’s set in its own society in the future.

I did _Forbidden City_ about Tiananmen Square with a tenth grader — it was a little long, though.

Have you asked your friendly neighborhood librarian for recommendations?

Sue:

Thanks for your reply. I haven’t consulted my friendly librarian because they often do not take into account students with learning disabilities when they make recommedations. I’ll continue searching for literature that is both an interesting read but also written at a level that can be enjoyed by LD students and meet the criteria of “short enough” so I don’t lose their interest.
