Hi!
I have a bright 7th grader who is failing pre-algebra.
I’m wondering if there are any tests (or curriculum) that would help me test my child to find out where her weaknesses are? She had poor math instruction in 5th and 6th grade. I suspect her problems may have started somewhere back there, but I’m not sure what she knows and what she doesn’t know.
Re: Testing for weaknesses in upper grades & Jr. High
I’ll try! I’m meeting with her next week.
Although I get the feeling the teacher may not care. I had to request the meeting. While I’ve heard of other teachers contacting parents when their children were failing.
This is all very frustrating. My daughter had a terrible teacher in 5th grade and although the teacher in 6th grade tried to make up for the lack of teaching that the kids received in 5th grade, they had no math text book!!!! In fact, this is the first year my daughter has ever had a math text book!!!!

Is there a teacher’s store anywhere near you? Around here there are stores that sell to teachers - workbooks, curriculum books etc. If there are, you could go there and browse around a find a workbook or some worksheets/quizzes that might give you an idea of where her weaknesses lie.
You could also with some work make up such a test yourself. Test her facts, additon, subtraction, multiplication and division. Does she have her facts down pat?
Then test her on fractions and the operations of fractions. Then decimals. And finally converting fractions to decimals and vice versa.
Good luck.
Re: Testing for weaknesses in upper grades & Jr. High
She has her general math facts. I think she has some difficulty with converting fractions and decimals so this may be where I need to help her.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Hmmm…. there are lots of standard-issue “placement tests” for math. FIfth & Sixth grade are critical years — but fortunately it’s not too late to try to fill in the holes. Can you ask her teacher, who may have such an animal (a general skills test) within easy reach?
