starting on the right side and sign checking

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Learning support showed me my child’s math quiz. My child did not start on the right side and wasn’t paying attention to the sign and at this point LS told me she is doing better in multiplication than in addition/subtraction.My child is in 4th grade.I had told them at beginning of year to have her draw a line on the right side to remember where to start and circle the sign.I had not seen this happening although it may be my child’s resistance to it.I asked if she could have more time to check over test but was told this is done in regular class so she can’t.My child did ask me last night if she was to start on this side pointing to the right side so obviously she need reminders.Any other ideas to help with this would be appreciated so we can get her out of the addition/subtraction and moving her on to other things.

Does she have issues with directionality? Does she know her right from her left, not just kinda know, but truely have it automatic?

Does she do ok with put this under, put that in front of, put that behind etc.?

My son used to do this but it got better with some visual spatial exercises we did. He also couldn’t read graphs or a numbers chart which also cleared up with those exercises.
He was a mess visual/spatial mess.

You might experiment and see how she does using graph paper—no more than four squares per inch, putting one digit in each square. My ds does not have the problem you are seeing, but lots of careless errors that miraculously disapper when he uses graph paper instead of the usual lined paper.
