Does anyone have any suggestions for good books for very low readers? I have several fifth graders reading at a grade 1-2. Of course it’s awful for me to give them books that are made for first graders, they hate and I don’t blame them. Any suggestion?
Re: books for children with learning disabilities
I believe the point was made on the reading board, but it bears repeating: please don’t just encourage them to go on as they are, but rather please work on teaching them to read and get them remediated up to grade level. I’ve posted lots about effective upgrading techniques and so has Shay — a quick search will find lots of help.

There are several wonderful books. The Magic Tree House starts off simple and follows through with additional guides. The Berenstein Bears also have a simple approach. Its a nice way to slide the children in from easy learning to more confident reading.
Its also important to remember they may not be reading at Grade 5 level however even if their reading toddler books its always good to build their confidence. Eventually they start to read so quickly they develop from the toddler stage to appropriate grade level.

Ask the librarian for “hi-low” books, but I find kids don’t mind the good early readers like Nate the Great.
