NEGATIVE INTEGERS

MY FOURTH GRADE DAUGHTER IS HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT OF POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS….. IS ANYONE AWARE OF A WEBSITE THAT COULD HELP HER WITH A FUN GAME STYLE PROGRAM?

Teach her about credit cards. You can go way past zero with credit cards.

Mommy has $100. She wants to buy a $150 dress. How much money will she owe the bank after she buys the dress?

You’d have to design the game but there are *lots* of ideas there. Let’s see… if you had dice and a coin you could take turns rolling the dice to get a number, flipping the coin to get whether it’s positiev or negatiev, and keeping a tally of what you get. You’d have to do something like have a five point bonus for every right answer or else you’d keep heading back to zero, of course… unless you taught absolute value at the same time…

First of all, any number can be negative, a fraction or a decimal or a whole number (integer). So it makes much more sense to teach negative numbers in general, not only integers.

Some time ago — like six months or more, which is an eternity on the net — I posted a couple of very long posts covering how you can teach these concepts with examples and pictures and puzzle problems.

You should be able to find these posts if you use the search option on the top of the page. Just type in my name and the words negative or signed — you should get oodles of info.
