Anyone know about Stern Structural Arithmetic?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

This program comes highly rec. The manipulatives are expensive, but in long run , maybe just a little more than Saxon if you used it up to 3rd grade . It is listed in the EPS catalog and I have not heard it mentioned on the board . I would be interested in any info. Thank you

I used Stern’s materials several years ago when I taught first grade. They were WONDERFUL! The children learned addition and subtraction almost effortlessly, and they had so much fun with the blocks. I’m going to be teaching first grade again next year, and I would like to use them again, but they’re so expensive. I would highly recommend them if you can afford them.

I am so happy to hear a response re: stern’s Structural Arithmatic. I have not ordered it yet. Can the program stand alone?. , or do I need to supplement (combine Saxon). Are their any other math programs I should consider before making the investment.( I have triplet 2 yr.olds so I look at as a long term investment) . Thank you for your help.

I live in Australia and have not seen Stern apparatus advertised here or in the UK catalogues for years and years. I used it extensively when I first started teaching in UK and it seems to have been supplanted by Unifix cubes. I would love to be able to source this apparatus again. Any ideas where from?

This program has been around for quite a while — while I haven’t used it myself I have only read & heard good things about it…. something tells me the equivalent could be designed for cheaper.

Ari,

I looked at this program, and it certainly reminds me very much of Math-U-See. MUS costs a fraction of what Stern costs probably because the manipulatives are plastic instead of wooden. I’d highly recommend looking at MUS before making a decision.

I used Stern’s Structural Arithmetic materials in my class last year and they were worth every penny! The kids loved the games and lessons and really began to understand multiplication and division. I took a three day workshop from Stern in New York City, which I found out about through the Int’l Dyslexic Association conference. The workshops were very helpful and inspiring!

Good luck :)

I just wanted to make a comment after looking at Stern materials a little more closely. The workbooks and teacher guides are not expensive, the manipulatives are. But I have looked at the Didax site and they have Unifix manipulatives that match most of the Stern manipulatives for much less money. So that may be a great solution to make Stern affordable!
