teacher with nose stud

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I live in a small community and one of the teachers has a nose stud. She has a tiny diamond in her nose. Some of the parents think its wrong and she should have to take it out. As a teacher she does a fine job and is professional in every way. I think it is fine and people should find something else to worry about. Any opinions?

I think this is a generational thing…I just got a loan and the loans officer had a nose stud (also a little diamond) — she would be mid to late 20’s. I giggled (and felt middle aged!)

I have two sets of holes in my ears…circa 1976 that was pretty daring. How many people do you know with 5 or more…

Just my opinion, but I agree with you — my son had a horrible teacher last year. Her dress and personal style, while boring, would not draw any controversy — but my son had a terrible time and only this year am I beginning to realize just how horrible.
I’d take a hardworking, competent teacher with a nose ring any day, even if she is ignorant about dyslexia…hope clear heads prevail on this one.

It’s a community matter. Each community has its own standards. Outside opinions on this can be irrelevant. We have a teacher in our school who has a fair number of piercings. It’s a new world out there but not everybody is comfortable with that or wants the new world on their doorstep.

I teach at the college level and at least a third of my students have nose rings, tongue pearcings, belly button rings (which they show off with cropped tops, regardless of the weather), tattoos, etc. These students are often the brightest and most creative in the class and I judge them by the quality of their work, not by my opinion of their clothing. When I was in college my parents cringed at my tight jeans and micro minis and my boyfriend’s long hair. I suggest the parents judge the teacher on her teaching methods and hope that nose rings are out of style by the time their kids are looking to express their individuality.

It’s a cultural thing. When we were young, it was daring to get our ears pierced. I had mine done against my mother’s wishes, as I recall. Many, MANY years later, she threw in the towel and had her own ears pierced because it was too hard to find earrings.

I do think, in terms of fashion, that it’s ridiculous for us to hold the younger generation to our standards of fashion. It changes with the times. I judge a person by her/his behavior. Period.
