As a new teacher specifically, an intervention specialist, my concern is that of co-teaching. I have substituted in many buildings, and have not seen it implemented in very positive ways. Generally the sped teacher focuses on adaptations and modifications and the general ed teacher focuses on all the content. As a special ed teacher, I have more to offer a classroom than just more role as an adaptation implementor! How do you all achieve parity in the classroom, specifically?
why the change Mary
If it was working well, why did the district suddenly change it to pull out resource?
Re: why the change Mary
Ya know… I’m not really sure…The teacher I was talking to is my neighbor. My son was going to go into the collaborative with her as the SpEd teacher, but I decided to go another route with him. I’ll definitely have to ask her why we’re breaking up Collaborative classroms. I know this year, the 2nd graders coming over from our primary school were all Reg Ed kids,& I think that’s why our 3rd grade collaborative was broken up. This is the last year our 5th grade collaborative Reg Ed teacher is going to be here… he’s retiring, so I bet the 5th grade Collaborative will split, but, come to think of it… we have 4th graders now in Collaborative,so maybe they’ll keep the Collaboratives as long as we have a need for them. We still have our 4th grade collaborative, but since we don’t have any 3rd graders in a collaborative this year,I’m wondering if they’ll split up the 4th grade collab.& have the SpEd teacher do a pull out reasouce.I’m going to look into the reasons though… I’m thinking it’s because we don’t have students who really need Collaborative…Pull out Resource is doing the job. I’m going to ask around though..
Hi…I’m a paraprofessional in my school disrtict. We’ve been using Collaborative classes for quite a few years with great success. The Sped teacher & the reg ed teacher work together in the classroom with the 7 or 8 Sped kids all included. The two teachers collaborate on how they will teach their class. It works out while one is teaching, the other circulates,& also comments,& pitches in during lecturing. They kind of “bounce off” each other. When the Sped teacher feels they’re teaching something that the Sped kids need more one on one with, the Sped teacher pulls all or some of them to the ante room connected to the classroom,& gives them more one on one, then they all return to the main room. Sadly though, our district is splitting up our “collaborative” or “co teaching module” (as we are supposed to be saying now to be politically correct. )The Sped teachers are teaching a pull out Resource now.
