Why does the process of referral and developing/approving an IEP take so long to complete? When a teacher notices that a student needs help, they need that help now, not 90 days later. As a teacher, what can I do in the mean time to try to help the student keep up while I am also teaching the whole class?
Re: Time to complete an IEP
Jill,
You just asked my favorite question I am a mom and have spent up to 6 mos waiting for changes I have requested.
The IEP’s I have gotten over the past 6 yrs. didn’t appear to be excessively detailed.
I’m a special education teacher so I know what you are going through. Here are some suggestions that you could try: give a hard copy of notes to student before you begin your lecture, give him/her study guides for tests, maybe give him/her a test bank of answers for a test or if giving multiple choice you could eliminate some answers and have a 50/50, talk with child after class and see if there is anything you can help them with. Just because they don’t have an IEP with these accommodations, or if their IEP is not up to date, doesn’t mean that you can’t give the accommodations you feel are needed. You are just giving FAPE. Hope this helps. Hang in there!
