ADD and test taking skills?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

By my own research on the disorder, my daughter was diagnosed ADD in the 8th grade. This after several years (from second grade) of little help form the school system. I always saw that she had a different style of thinking. Through the years with a lot of overriding “acceptable practices” she has overcome many of the obstacles. She is well adjusted socially, very organized and disciplined. I believe this was achieved by allowing her her own space to learn what she needed to do to achieve success.2 obstacles remain for academic success: Memory and test taking abilities. She achieves high A’s in homework, class participation, projects buy her test grades will pull her down to a C or a D. The school can not see their way clear to assessing her in a different manor. We have home studied the Kevin Trudeau Memory course which was somewhat helpful.I am looking for any type of course that deals specifically with ADD and memory and/or test taking skills. Can anyone advise of any in the New York Metropolitan area (I am in NJ)? Thank You

Test taking is a skill, and one which my child has not mastered either. Courses like Kaplan make a mint helping kids score better on their SATs and private tutors charge more than I could ever afford to teach wealthy kids these tricks of the trade. Wouldn’t it be nice if schools would offer a class to teach LD kids the study skills and test taking skills that most kids seem to just absorb from experience? Beyond that, your child should get the accomodations of more time on tests, be allowed to take breaks to move around at frequent intervals and take them in a smaller and less distracting setting if you think that would be helpful. Either that or the tests should be modified.: By my own research on the disorder, my daughter was diagnosed ADD in
