Software for spelling drills?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am trying to find software that will help my son do spelling drills on SPECIFIC words - ie., his 3rd grade weekly spelling lists. I want to be able to enter the words weekly, and let him work on the computer rather than with me. My son has visual processing problems, dysgraphia, ADHD and bipolar disorder. It is too frustrating and time consuming for him to copy the words, and he works better with the computer than with me. Any experience with something like this out there?

Thanks in advance
Laura

My sons is Dyslex. On spelling words I found that if I put them to a strong beat he can learn them in a snap.

In our school our son has to memorize memory work (often quite long) and for that I make up a melody and he learns to sing the memory work. At least with our son he can learn the lines to a song he likes much faster than just learning to repeat words.

I can’t demonstrate it on line though to show you what I mean. It is nothing complicated and you don’t have to be musical to do it.

I also have taken his spelling workbook and made up sheets on the computer for him (I just spend on Saturday and did it for the whole year). He pulls up a sheet and finds all his spelling words listed with about 5 lines to the right of each word so he can type the word five times himself. I have even used sand in a box lid and had him write with his finger the word when I test him on the words myself at home.

But overall for our son learning the spelling words to a beat has really helped. The computer word is something I do once a week as another modality.

We have it in our IEP to have his spelling list reduced to 10 words. He takes the entire test and any words he gets right over the 10 words are counted as bonus points….which encourages him to really try to get the other words right when taking the test…and encourages him to maybe try to get 11- 12- or 13 words learned if HE WANTS TOO.

For us it made learning his spelling words to a beat takes only minutes each night rather than hours of frustration and …..well you know what I mean. It can be a nightmare.

Good luck and I’d like to know if you try this if it works for you?!?

The best software I have found is Davidson’s Spell It PLus. It has a word editor which allows you to input the weekly spelling lists and sentences, then save the data to disk or on your hard drive. There are numerous activities integrating visual and auditory tasks. I have used this program for over ten years with much success in the k-6 resource room for LD.

I will like to know how I could get one of this software and for how much. Could a parent request this software during an IEP meeting?
