hand held speaking spell checker

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi
My nephew’s teachers have said he will now be allowed to use a speaking spell checker at school. He will be starting 5th grade in the fall, and we are starting to look for one. The Franklin Homework Wiz looks interesting, then there are a few more expensive ones. Has anyone used these? Any suggestions? I’ve looked on the technology page, but most information on spell checkers seems to be for computer software. Should we try for a laptop instead? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hard to believe it’s time for back-to-school shopping…

As an LD teacher I have some Franklin Speaking Spellers in the resource room that we use there and during SOL testing. I just love to see the children use them after they have gained enough phonics knowledge to spell the word close enough for the machine to recognize it and access its database. If your nephew does not have those skills, the machine will prove to be more frustrating than helpful. Why don’t you let him try one at the store?

I would hesitate to allow a child of mine to take a $100+ Franklin Speller to school unless there is an exceedingly honest population there. I think the Homework Wiz is a better idea for the school. Maybe the expensive one could be saved for home.

Please feel free to email me with questions.

My daughter found that the Speaking Homework Wiz didn’t have the vocabulary that she needed in 5th grade. From her experience and experience working in schools, I have found that I like the speaking Homework Wiz for elementary school and the Speaking Dictionary (I always forget the correct name) for middle and high school. The Speaking Homework Wiz appears to have a fragile LCD screen and should be packed carefully in a knapsack.
