Programs that teach reading

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am looking for a program that would help readers who are significantly below grade level. Any suggestions?

You might want to look into a program called Reading SOS. It is based on Orton Gillingham’s techniques. We have seen great successs in our school district for students who have difficulty learning to read.

I forget the publisher, but I know you can find it on the web - type in “Reading SOS.

Good luck!

It’s the best out there by a pretty good margin (at least that I’ve seen). I”ve found *LOTS* of programs with lots of wonderful claims, but generally they provide Fun P ractice With Easy Reading … which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s basically reading stuck on a computer platform.

Even SOS doesn’t replace a *teacher.*

Kerswell 2000 program is a good tool. You scan in the document and the computer will read the words highlighting them at the same time. I think before teaching someone to read it is more important to find out why they are having difficulty reading (letter recognition, attention, organisational problem, etc).

I think this is excellent software for additional practice in controlled vocabulary work.

The home and clinic versions are in the reasonable range; however, the school version is hugely expensive.

I think WYNN is a better format, easier to learn and a wonderful tool to help those that need to read, READ!
