Time to complete adn IEP

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Why does the process of referral and developing/approving an IEP take so long to complete? When a teacher notices that a student needs help, they need that help now, not 90 days later. As a teacher, what can I do in the mean time to try to help the student keep up while I am also teaching the whole class

Jill,
Can you give us some more information? What exactly are you hoping that the student will be able to do? What are their strengths and areas of need? What accommodations do you currently build into your curriculum that are beneficial for this student?
I’m sure your child study team or pre-referral team or whatever you call your team must have some suggestions for you as well. Ask them for help, too.

Ok, its a bit later than April but I will try to answer. As a speech therapist I am very grateful for those 90 days. You need to get the initial paperwork, make sure everyone knows what testing is being done, do testing (it can take up to 6 weeks to do this as we also need to do therapy and have other kids in the school, district or region to see and test), write up the test report. This has to be done by a number of people. A classroom observation needs to be conduced and written up. In an idea world we could do every student ASAP but there is only so much time in a day and a week and etc…
