Processing language is the act of understanding what is being said to, sorting out the information and the ability to then answer appropriately. Sometimes this goes along with word retrieval, being able to process the informatin you have just heard and then pull out of your brain the proper words to answer back. Aphasia, or word retrieval difficulty can be looked at as opening a file drawer, going to the properly organinzed file and retrieving the word you are looking for, except that when there is a deficit here the child’s brain is like a file drawer that has had all of the files dumped in, being in absolutely no order and then having to search and search until the proper word for a correct response is found. By this time usually other information is forgotten or toally missed. Hope this brief synopsis helps. sharon G.
