I got into grad school to become an SLP!! I made the first cut…which was really exciting for me. This has been a very challenging program as I realized on top of my hearing impairment I have ADD. I would get frustrated when I would take exams and blow some stupid questions. I had inconsistent attention in the classroom which impacted my grades. I used an assistive listening device and accomodations for taking tests where I wouldn’t be distracted and that helped me make better grades…Notwithstanding the challenges I have encountered I have found much support from my friends here on LDOnline and I wanted to thank you all for helping me when I was ready to give up. I also wanted to encourage those who have learning disabilities or CAPD or ADHD that you can reach your goals no matter how hard things can be….. where there is a will there is a way! :-)
Let's Do Lunch...
We have much to talk about.
While you probably weren’t admitted to the most elite correspondence academy in our nation as I was, there is still reason for you to be proud of your accomplishment.
Now that you are in grad school, I imagine that you’re looking for a mentor. Even though I haven’t agreed with many of your posts, I’m willing to look past that and take you under my wing. We all know about forgiving youthful indiscretions. You could really learn a lot from me if you play your cards right.
Friend to friend, you should probably stay away from this board. It will give some administrators the wrong idea about where your true loyalties lie. Think about your future. A gal like you could really go places in Central Administration on the fast track.

Wow!
That’s wonderful news! When I wasn’t sure what the heck LD’s were or what was available for them, your posts were like candles in a cave. I’m sure you’ll become an outstanding SLP!

Re: I just wanted to let my friends know..
Congrats to you!!!! Boy, just in time for me too. You are an inspiration. I have been seriously considering going back to school to finish my teaching degree. I too am interested in SLP, but don’t know if I’d get that far (getting old for crying out loud!). I have APD too, and had the same types of problems as you mention when I was in college so many years ago. I couldn’t take it, and quit. Biggest regret I have now. But I didn’t know then what I know now (that I am APD), and the only thing holding me back at this time is TIME! Very nice to hear you are going forward!
Hey Petie...read my lips...:-
I would come for the FREE lunch on your dime but I would never step over the line to the DARK side (for those who don’t know the dark side is school administrators and the miles of red tape called administration…)
I got into grad school with the department knowing I am one who doesn’t accept status quo you can call me Donna Quixote…
:-P
You can do it!!!
Denise,
Oh boy… I know what you mean about feeling old… I am old enough to be a mother to many of my classmates and they are my freinds, age doesn’t matter the friendships cross the lines of age. I am having the time of my life and learning tons. What do you have to lose? You will always get older but what you do with your time is what counts…You go GIRL you can make a difference!!!!

Re: Let's Do Lunch...
Great news Patti! Peter, you better hope she doesn’t do your district. Those high heels will become flats. In fact perhaps when you have walked some miles in the shoes Patti, other parents and our children walk, maybe you’ll see things differently. Patti will not only be a great SLP, but she will champion the cause of those who fight the windmills of apathy and the ineffective status quo.
Congratulations:):):)
I am so proud of you- it has been such a lot of work and you have been so persistant! Good luck as you take on this new challenge!

Re: You can do it!!!
Give yourself a big pat on the back! Then help me with my ignorance, please, and tell me what SLP stands for.
I know that you will bring insight and understanding to your grad school studies that will help those young minds in class with you look at things in a different way. Your learning differences will make the classes more valuable for everyone, including, I’ll bet, the instructors. Nice work! JJ
Re: You can do it!!!
SLP = Speech and Language pathology..Thanks for the congrats! How are you and your kids doing?
Re: You can do it!!!
Congratulations to you and God bless. I am new to this site and have not had the benefit of getting to know you yet.
As a mom of a 9 yr. old ld boy in 3rd grade special ed working at about a first grade six month level execept math he is second grade six months.
Your sucess story made me cry just like they all do when I have a few moments to remember that all things are possible.

I have an advanced degree. Don’t think that I didn’t notice for several hours that your “P” forms a tongue sticking out of a mouth. You’re no better than that pathetic little construction worker that frequents this board.
Do you know who I am, missy? Do you know the power I wield? I can make life miserable for you.
There’s only one way to make a smiley and you’d better learn that now if you want to be an SLP in my district. A colon, a short dash, and a right paren. :-)

Such a little person are you...
Since you feel the need Peter, to exemplify the organ which shares your name, I will fall to my compulsion to yank your chain once again.
You remind me once again what petty little Hitler-wannabees too many of the school administrators in our country really are at heart. Lording over those you are being paid to serve like you do really is a sad commentary upon both the hiring practices in public schools, and upon you yourself.
Once again you have made me feel completely satisfied that I am homeschooling my autistic boy, rather than trust him to the likes of you and your bastard cousins. I may reconsider allowing my NT kids to attend your schools as well…
You know, I believe your cousin is the administrator at my local elementary. I can’t begin to tell you how much better my boy’s behaviors became when I pulled him out of the sad excuse for a sped program in that school. All of the behaviors that we used to get notes about dried up and disappearewd when we removed the unecessary stress that public school gave him. I wonder how many other children would begin to mellow and then thrive if they too were pulled from second rate programs run by third string people such as yourself? Ah… If W gets his way, we may soon have vouchers for all, and we will see if this is the case.
Reminds me of that old adage… Those who cannot do teach, and those who cannot teach administrate.
Have a nice day!
Re: I just wanted to let my friends know..
Congratulations! I discovered this board a few years ago, and I check it fairly regularly. You can always be counted on to give solid, helpful and encouraging advice. Please don’t go away now that you will be busier!

Yo Petie,
I sure am enjoying changing barbs with you. :-P The definition for EIP…. is that Emptyheaded Idiotic Principal’s meeting for finding where you placed your mind??? I won’t go there…:-P
{:-P}
welcome and thank you Marion..
Welcome to a very friendly place…:-) Tell me more about your son and maybe I can help you help him.
Sincerely,
pattim
Re: :P is that better? or is it this way" >:-P
LOL!! I am enjoying this little exchange. [grin] “Peter Principal” does a great job of dramatizing and caricaturing the infamous administrators who are guilty of trying to save money at the expense of the children. Welcome back, PP; dramatize some more, and give the frustrated families someone to vent their anger on! [big evil grin]
Yours truly,
Kathy G.
Re: Excuse ME?!
Yo Peeved!
Guess I must of missed this thread! Couldn’t be more proud of Patti :)
Thanks for the chuckle :) :) :) Must of sinched up those stilletoes a bit to tight today.
I’ve been quite busy working, holding a steady job, being accountable to employers/clients/governing authorities; oh, sorry, you wouldn’t understand any of that. It means enjoying that good old satisfied feeling of a job well done after working hard.
In your world, it is better defined by: “The bitterness of low qualitiy lingers on long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” In reality, you’d lose your @$$ if you had to compete, even with the odds in your favor with such an impressive diploma from the mail order service.
Petey, you forget the old days are gone. Patti knows you and how your system works, and with proper training, some high technology equipment, she will have you on film, tape and digitally enhanced to show your true colors to those that might just give a rat’s backside about your antics.
Anyway, again, thanks for the chuckles… :)
Yours truly,
Andy

“Friend to friend, you should probably stay away from this board. It will give some administrators the wrong idea about where your true loyalties lie. Think about your future.”
Hmmmmm…..I am on this board and others like it quite often, but have had no problem securing a position in a school district. In fact the administrators like the fact that I am a parent of a special needs child and can offer the school a unique perspective. Of course, we have had our moments, but all in all I believe it is working well. I know the other regular ed teachers enjoy having someone to bounce problems off, to better understand their students’ needs.
I am happy not all administrators have your attitude. >:-)
Re:pattim about my son
Hi Patti,
My name is Anne but someone was using that so on here I am Marion. My husband and I were foster parents for over 8 yrs. and had many kids with learning problems including ADD. My husband has two grown kids so, we were not novice parents.
Danny will be 9 on June 3rd. he was adopted at birth and there were no problems during his mom’s pregnancy or his birth.
He walked at 8 months old and has been a very active kid ever since, not hyper just on the go.
When he was under two I kept telling the pediatricians that he should be talking more. They just gave me the song about he’s a boy, he will talk, once he starts you won’t be able to shut him up. I knew something was not right.
When he was almost three the pediatrician said “This child is three and not talking”. Wow! He was talking very little. The ped. sent him to a speech therapist he hated and she was awful with kids. The only thing he said to her after 6 sessions at $75.00 a pop was “Open the door I want my Mom”.
I called the elemantary school speech therapist and she referred me to Lincoln Intermediate Unit (that is our special ed) here. His hearing was thourghly tested and fine and he was tested and finally put in therapy 2 times a week.
By now he was 4 and at the end of the school yr. we had no more speech because it is through schools and they don’t tutor.
His speech therapist told us to put him in kindergarten. We did and by the first six weeks the teacher and speech therapist said he could not get it.
So, he had a complete evaluation and the psychologist who had seen him maybe for an hour told us that he was only using the left side of his brain and would require sp. ed his whole life. I was horrified that someone could project a 5 yr. olds whole lift.
Anyway off he went to special kindergarten and did fine except he was put in a neurologically impaired class with kids who had pretty major problems.
He is still in sp. ed ni class because there are not any other classes he could go to.
He likes school and is good at math at his IEP the teacher said he can add and subtract 4 lines of numbers but she only ever gives him two for class and homework.
His reading is at 1.3 level and he is getting better. I had him tutored and the tutor was working at level 2 and he could do it.
Spelling the IEP has him at 1.4 but he gets 100% every week (almost).
His handwriting used to be great but now he goes to fast.
He is in regular class gym, art, music goes on all the extra activities with the regular third grade. I asked that he be tried in math in regular class but his teacher said he would be frustrated.
He has never been a behavior problem at school, sitters, bus etc. He saves that for me (just kidding all kids test parents).
He is excellent at all sports follows their rules and everyone likes him. He is very compansionate and helps teacher with the other kids.
I want to get him tutoring or help over the summer so he keeps going forward.
I requested a new psychological since he has been seen in four years. He is at 85-90% of his speech goals for this year.
He has a mind like a steal trap when it comes to events he enjoys how to get places in the car and stuff like that.
I am sorry this is so long. It is difficult to make it short.
Thanks for your concer.
what a special little boy..
Sounds like he is making good progress with the SLP. Has she made any suggestions to you about what you should do with him during the summer? How is he doing with his phonemic awareness and spelling? Is the SLP working on that during therapy? I think you are right on the money in regards to getting him retested. This should have been doing at 3 years. That is called a Triennial review. My daughter has had 3 of those. I am going to be homeschooling my daughter next fall in some of her classes because she has speech and language delays on top of being ADD. It is tough…some days her patience and mine is pretty thin…
Re: Excuse ME?!
Too bad you can not spell. Please take you’re cynism and attitude to
your superintendent before I do and stay professional.
I am appalled that you would embarrass your sekf in this way, this message board if for parents of special needs children ONLYPeter Principal wrote:

Re: Let's Do Lunch...
The Peter Principal states that employees rise through the ranks until they reach a level where they become incompetent. Laurence Johnston Peter (1919-1990) set forth the principal!
I think you’re going to make an awesome SLP!
My son has benefited from your advice over the years. Thanks for the posts on this BB. You’re already making a difference for kids!
