Materials

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

After more than 9 years of limping on the same cheap budget, we have been told we are getting a large sum of money this year. Since I can never buy anything, really, I don’t spend too much time dreaming about higher priced items.

I am interested in materials for elementary LD students. I have read, in years past, about phonological awareness software that was so pricey I could not even look twice ($400-500 for a single computer). I believe, Sue has mentioned this product. Any ideas, Sue?

Other materials that will build phonological processing for LD, reading comprehension and fluency are of interest. Can you suggest programs, software and material you like? I have Read Naturally and Great Leaps already. Thanks in advance.

Lexia Software is really good support for what you’re doing — solid reinforcement of reading skills. It’s www.lexialearning.com (http://www.lexialearning.com/products.htm for the “products” page — and that’s got a link to prices.) THey’ve got an “early learning” PA program, and a K-3 program too. It does a better job of using the computer for what it’s good for — short sound-based activities — without pretending to be a teacher and having a recorded voice talking at the student (but, of course, being a computer, not being able to tell when the kid’s not paying attention). It also can branch to harder or easier exercises depending on how the kid performs, and keeps records.

You may wish to look at Phyllis Fischer’s work. If I had a sum of money for use in my LD room, I would invest in books on tape. Regards, Ken

Take a look at www.earobics.com. The software is good for phonological awareness skills. I have it at home and at school.
