Reading and programing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello, I moved school districts and states this year. I am struggling with meeting the needs of my students and their IEP’s. I was wondering if you could give me any ideas for a reading program that would remediate decoding and Spelling. I also was wondering if you all new any great resources Professional or Student material that you consider a must have for your classroom. I am always searching. Thanks and I will take any feedback I can get…. :)

I am researching reading and spelling programs, too. A lot of people here like “Reading Reflex” by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness. It is inexpensive and teaches the basic reading decoding skills.

However, a dyslexic child may need something more comprehensive and I am looking at one more program which is based on Spalding (an Orton-Gillingham based program). It is a curriculum for reading/spelling/written language published by the Riggs Institute. You may want to look at the site:

EPS has a good many effective materials so you may want to request their print catalog. The Explode the Code books are good for the decoding and there are several spelling programs. Spellwell is by the author of Explode the Code, I think.

The earlier you can find something really effective and then use it intensively, the better for your students!
