how to prepare child for eval?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m looking for suggestions on how to prepare/explain to my 5yo about the testing/eval we will be doing in few months. I’ve read some on this and understand about telling the child we’re going to get you some help for you problem, but I don’t think my child is really aware he has a problem.

Well, I certainly wouldn’t tell a child who doesn’t know they have a problem that they do!!! My son was tested several times before K and we just told him that they were going to play games with him. I would make sure he knew that someone was going to take him into a different room too. Usually you aren’t allowed to be there, although I did watch several evaluations when my son was very young—like 3. Young children don’t see this the same way adults do or even older children for that matter. It is probably a much bigger deal to you than him. I also wouldn’t tell him anything until the day before. You don’t want it to seem like a big deal.

You must never let a child think he has a problem. Especially at age 5. School will do that.(UNFORTUURNATELY) Teach your child about individual differences, tobe proud of who he is. You can help him be exposing him to people, places and ideas. Use magazines, your sourroundings to maske up learning games. What’s that, hoe many–- does it have. what is it used for. what do you think they are doing in that picture. what might they do next. (Help your child reason. Help him with high level thinking. You know the basics, like teachinh his name……phone number…. people and object names. But make it fun. reward your child with praise. Tell him he’s smart. Ther is something that he does well. give him opportunities to experience success. BUILD HIS SELF-ESTEEM AND INSTILL IN HIM A DESIRE TO LEARN AND NOT GIVE UP!!!!
