new school district

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We are planning a move which may be out of our current school district. We fought to get our son a one on one aide in a regular second grade classroom with after school tutoring in reading and math (also 1- on -1). The iep is done and we are wondering if our next school will have to follow it or will we have to subject him to new evaluations and fight all over again. The district we are in now is an Abbott District and so is the one we’re considering moving to (if that makes a difference). We were looking forward to this school year with these modifications and our comfort with all the people invovled but that could all get turned around with a new school. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Your son’s IEP should not need to change simply because you are changing school districts. The only reason I could think of for a new eval would be if you were changing states and he needed to be assessed for eligibility under the new state’s guidelines. Otherwise, the new school should just follow the IEP. You may need a meeting though- just to meet folks and share information.

Not to be nosey (well maybe a little:) your son’s services are VERY intense. I don’t know many situations where after school time is included in an IEP. Would you be willing to share a bit more?

I don’t think you’re being nosey at all. I am happy to share our successful outcome. Previous to our June meeting our son had a 504 plan to help with ADHD. We have had very close contact with the Director of Special Ed from the time he began Kindergarten there and dare say, I consider him a friend. In Dec. we had a meeting because his teacher was concerned about his lack of progress and we felt he needed reading recovery. He was supposed to be re-evaluated at the time and also be eval. for LD. To make a long story shorter the ball was dropped and these things did not happen. I called my friend and expressed our disappointment and he got the evals. done with a rush order of them. By now its June and we are in the meeting. However, my frind was not there and the other member of our “team” tried placing him in another school in an inclusion classroom. After an hour and half of arguing my friend showed up and said “He needs to be in a reg. 2nd grade classroom with a 1 on 1 aide and we can provide him with after school tutoring for reading and math. This was exactly what we wanted and the mouths of everyone else dropped. In 2 minutes he accomplished what we wanted all along. My son has already started the tutoring this summer and he loves it. We are fortunate in that we have a handful of people who know us and are willing to help in big ways for the benefit of our son. I am scared to death to think what it may be like somewhere else. By the way they classified him as mutiple disabled. That’s kind of vague to me but I am comfortable with the outcome. Thanks for your response.

My daughter gets Speech/Language services due to a speech problem and we moved after Kindergarten but her IEP moved with her. In our case they put her in speech and just copied the IEP over and sent it home for me to sign with the new names on it but everything was verbatim. I know your cse is a little more complex but the district would have a fight on their hands to try to prove that your child does not need the same services in their district as in the previous one.
