For fun, we like Storybook Weaver. Although, the my son can get caught up in the graphics more than the writing. My son is 10 and ADD/LD too. He is dsygraphic with very poor handwriting skills, among other things.

There is a software program called Kidspiration for kids and also Inspiration that are designed to help organize ideas and support writing. They have a website: www.inspiration.com I’ve also seen some posts about it on the bulliten boards. It runs about $80 I think. I was going to purchase it, but decided to use a low-tech approach instead. One advantage is that he can use this approach at his desk at school.

My son has a lot of trouble organizing and planning what he is going to write. Here’s our practicing approach. We start with a picture to generate an idea. He decides what type of paragraph he is going to write - story, description, dialogue, etc… Then using post-it notes he jots down words to help plan his topic sentence and details. After he has some details planned, he places the post-its in a sequence and begins writing. He can either use the computer (MSWord) or pencil and paper. Sometimes I write a story at the same time. Once he is done, we share our paragraphs and look for ways to improve them. When he uses Word on the computer, I turn on the grammer and spelling feature to highlight things that are incorrect. I also change the font to a very large font, so that he can see his work easily.

Good Luck
Rosie
