On the Move!!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

After fighting our school district for the last 8 years to provide reading instruction for our bright, dyslexic son we are packing up and moving to a new area 100 miles away where our son can attend a private college prep high school for learning disabled students. I attended a school board meeting a few weeks ago and told our district how frustrating the district special ed program has been. Since I was a special ed teacher in the district, I also told the board and superintendent how they have paid teacher inservice days but provide no reading instruction for special ed teachers. Their “thank you” response was infuriating. I know we could have gone the legal route and tried to make them pay for the private school, but I didn’t think I could stand the stress. So, the moving van comes this week. We have found a two bedroom, one bath apartment within walking distance of our son’s school. I have a job. My husband will commute for a while. Our house has not sold, but September is approaching. A bright side is that we can move out gradually. The brightest side is the hope we all feel about an appropriate education for our son. Reading instruction daily, opportunities to learn how to learn even if you do it differently. The move is hard, but we feel blessed to have the opportunity. I’ll keep you posted. Knowing there are other parents like me has been my greatest support. God Bless us all!

I know this has been a long struggle for you. Maybe the light is in sight.

Way to go Angela! Wishing you and your family success and less stress with the move (except for your husband’s commuting). It’s been a long time coming, and you will see that there is much more to life than fighting with your district. Watch out for a while, your nerves will still be on edge for quite a bit; so think first before leaping at circumstances as they arise; you’ll be amazed how raw you are when you get out of the situation.
