Getting my son tested....

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Thanks for all your input (see previous post about ‘son enteing 3rd grade with reading problems). I am going to the school tomorrow to sign the referral papers for getting my son tested. We are in a small school district in rual SD. So, our school belongs to a co-op that does testing at numerous schools in the area. I did talk to my son’s old speech therapist, and she walked me thru the whole process. She also told me about the modifications that could be made to his IEP if he qualifies for help.

I’m kinda nervous about what the tests will show, but also want to find an answer to his reading/comprehension problem. Kinda scary to think you may have a kid labeld as LD - make you wonder what you did wrong as a parent. Guess it’s just something I need to work out!

I will keep you posted as to his results, because I’m sure I’ll need more advice once we get them. Thanks again for all the input!

Whether or not testing shows that your son has the sort and magnitude of processing deficits that equals an LD doesn’t mean that you have done anything wrong. I am more inclined to think that you are doing things right! I am left handed and a bit pigeon toed- my mother did not cause either of these things - except genetically- whic she has no control over:). In fact- both my kids are left handed too… It is wonderful that you have worked up the courage to deal with this - it can be a long aqnd frequently frustrating road- but better with information than without.

A neurologic test that reveals a reading disorder does not create a “label.” A reading disorder is a diagnosis….a medical diagnosis. If your son is diagnosed, focus on how to treat the reading disorder…what accomodations and learning tools and environment are best for your son.
If the testing rules out a reading disorder, then look at what changes may help your son learn better.

a very wise person told me this and I am FINALLY getting it.

Currently reviewing possible IEP formats.” Testing for content without concern for spelling or neatness”-yess!!!!!

How frustrsting for ds to study for days, learn the material and still fail because of spelling errors-is it any wonder he’s given up? Im more than ready to open those doors!
