What does a community college need? I have a new job...

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Our small, local community college has a grant that will pay me for 20 hours/ week to provide services for LD students. Of course I’ve got ideas of my own… individual work with students to figure out learning styles and strategies, target strengths and weaknesses, etc.; work with faculty to make learning accessible without watering down the content; career guidance; I’d like to propose doing outreach to high schools so an LD kiddo could take those “developmental” courses in high school instead of waiting… what support would you like to see?

This is above and beyond what the “disabilities” center already provides, above & beyond “peer tutoring” and the like which are offered to everybody already.

How about training in using assistive technology like recorders etc? Most high schools don’t use much beyond the computer- and there is a lot of helpful stuff that can go into class. I can thinl of a lot of college classes where I would love to have recorded while I was taking notes…

Good for you!

I’d like to see heightened awareness and knowledge on the part of faculty, i.e., in-service training in the area of l.d.s, so that each new student doesn’t have to go over the same territory again and again to achieve accommodations. It would be nice if at least some of the faculty already knew and understood.
