Grading

I’ve been approached by a 4th grade reg. ed teacher about the possiblity of putting a comment on report cards that indicates that accomodations are being made in the classroom. for kids with IEPs. Any ideas? Is there a legal issue with this? Thanks for your help.

i dont know if it is legal or not but my sond report card has said grades are modified per IEP .This has always been on his report card since he has always had modifications and accomidations.

As a special education teacher I mark on the grade cards that grades in classes which the student exhibits a disability are based on the instructional level with appropriate modificiations and accomidations. I have never had an administrator of any kind tell me that I could not do this.

I would ask that they include just what the accommodations are. THis could be useful in getting next year’s teachers to provide the same accommodations.

I have always given the teacher their instructional level, and the grade or the teacher gives the grade depending on who is keeping records. I have never had a problem with this. I know that I am not allowed to place the level on the cummulative record card in their office folder, but I can on the report cards.

My son has been sp.ed for 3 years, his report cards do not state anything about his acc’s or mod’s. He gets a separate report card based on his iep in addition to the regular report card. His standardized tests results do have a star indicating a student taking it with acc’s. He has been in two different schools (public and dodds) and they both use this system. Wondering for whose benefit would you need to make the indication? Parents, teacher and principal already know about the acc’s and mod’s.

Yes my son gets aseparate report from his sp.ed teacher and speech, OT each 9 weeks withhow he acheiving or meeting his goals .However in all subjects but math he has a * mark saying grades are acheived with modifications and grades are modified.

I have a copy of policies from the Iowa Department of Educaiton- March 1999 entitled Grades, Diplomas, and Transcripts for Students with Disabilities. Very clear answers to this question- I suggest you contact your state’s Dept. of Ed. and ask for such information. Specifically the reports states, “an asterik or other symbol or code may be used on a studen’t report card to indicate that the student has had a modified curriculum in the general education classroom. They asterik or symbol should not, however, signify special education. Asteriks or symbols should not appear soley on the report cards of students in special education; they should also be used for general ed. students.”

That’s the way my son’s report card looks too. It was explained to me that as long as he was part of the standard grade level curriculum, this was the way it was done. There is a separate area on the report card that is not used for most kids, where individualized goals are set for children for whom the grade level curriculum is clearly inappropriate. But my son doesn’t have any of these.

Like your son, mine gets a separate report from the SPED teacher that is directly tied to his IEP goals and objectives, and is in narrative form. My son doesn’t have any accomodations for standardized testing, so I’m not sure if this would look different if he did.

But again, that is talking about a modified curriculum, which I assume means content? That’s different than modifications of teaching methods, or accomodations like length of time, length of assignments, etc.

My son does get accomindations for standarized testing and it says so on the test results to so far.he has areader and a scribe.

I received accommodations, such as extended time on exams, use of a calculator, and intermittently, access to a word processor, although no modifications, in all grades in the public schools. From the pupil’s perspective, I think that although it probably doesn’t matter very much for a fourth grader, older students might object to ‘tagging’ like that, for the same reason that they protested ETS noting SAT results that were taken under non-standard admissions - it reduces their discretion over when and how to disclose their disability to people reading their transcript. Again, for elementary school kids it probably doesn’t matter, but it is, I think, a questionable practice for students that will be using transcripts to apply to college, internships etc. because it makes them vulnerable to the very real discrimination that exists against such kids in a very explicit way.
