HEllo everyone!
I have an almost six year old child with speech and possible language problems. He does okay on single worrd artic tests, but is nearly impossible for strangers to understand at the sentence level.
The school speech therapist is a gem, but overworked and restricted to an “educational” model of speech therapy that doesnt really seem to help my son very much.
His private therapist is fantastic and has gotten him from nearly impossible to understand to intelligible to me (at least) most of the time.
HOWEVER, our insurance only pays for 60 consecutive days of speech therapy for the lifetime of the policy and that, along with our fully funded flexible medical spending account, is long gone. At $112 per session we just can’t afford a great deal of private therapy (once a week right now and it hurts!)
So, it has been suggested to us by both slps that we should get him an ACCESS card, which is essentially a medicaid card. Apparently, in PA at least, this is supposed to be relatively easy to do for any child with a school certified disablilty regardless of parental income. … But I have no idea of how to go about this. Does anyone know?

Re: Help! Speech therapy and ACCESS
I live in Pa too and didn’t know about the ACCESS. Call your local State Representative they will get info for you.
Elizabeth,
I dont know, but I would love to know if you find out about this ACCESS card. Ill do some research too.
I know how you feel, my 8 yr old has been in speech for 3 years now… 1 day week for 3 yrs I can see the differance but im not sure how much an outsider sees. It would be great to have insurance that would cover a provide speech specialist.
