With our gifted/dyslexic son facing high school, we decided to dump our local district, sell our house, find new jobs and move near to a college prep high school for learning disabled students. As these first two months of school went by my husband and I would wonder if we had done the right thing. He seemed happy, went to school even when he woke up grumpy, got right to his homework, brought home good test scores. Looks good, we’d say. The first report card finally came ( they have 3 per semester) and he has 4 As and 2Bs. The very next day we he brought home a flyer that his art work from class was going to be part of an exhibit at a local gallery. We went to a small showing and reception and made a fuss about our family artist. So we are very happy. His classes are very small (less than 10 students), his work is hard enough to be challenging, but he is not stressed and frustrated. We know we are fortunate to have been able to do this, and I am happy to tell you “so far, so good”.
Re: Wonderful so far!
I’m so happy for you and I’m so impressed at the lengths you went to to find the right school for your son. You’re lucky this school exists and he’s lucky to have you for parents.
Re: In california...
The Winston School in Del Mar, CA. When I became aware of the existance of this type of school, I found a number across the country. This was close enough to our home in Los Angeles County to be do able. We feel fortunate all the way around.
Try Peterson's
www.peterson’s.com has an extensive directory. At their site go to private schools and then specia needs. Winston in CA is not listed, but I found it when I visited Winston in San Antonio during a trip. Whenever I travel I would look in the yellow pages. People seem happy to refer you to other schools and you need to find one that fits your child’s needs. There are even professionals who help you find a school, but they are pricy.
