Re: Visual SAT Vocabulary Flashcards
I like the looks of this, and ordered it, but the price is steep.
A similar, less expensive option is to get Vocabulary Cartoons. There are three of these books — one for middle school and two more at high school level — available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble stores, etc. These use a similar cartoon format, but are in book form. Each book has 260 words.
The middle school book is ISBN 0-9652422-7-7 and retails for $12.95. The 260 words are split up into chapters of 10 words each. Each word has a page with the word, pronunciation guide, cartoon, cartoon caption using the word, and three additional sentences using the word. There are some matching and fill-in-the-blank exercises at the end of each chapter. Some words chosen at random from this book are avert, recite, wail, encroach, salient, impale, enamor…..

Yes, I know which cartoon books you are talking about, but the pictures do not explain the meaning of the word. For example, for “truculent” the picture might show a truck. This does nothing to help with the meaning, but rather it helps with the pronunciation. The visual SAT Flashcards are completely different. They may be a few dollars more, but the pictures wonderfully illustrate the meaning of the words. Check the site again and you’ll see what I mean. www.picturevocabulary.com

They are cute but...
I do this type of vocabulary instruction with kids and have them create their own images. My having them do the work they are able to remember what the words mean and how to use them. Also, I like it when the words are incorporated in a story which helps them with the usage and application that just the picture/definition and one sentence would do.
EPS has vocabulary workbooks with pictures in their Wordly Wise 3000 series A. B and C. These words and pictures are incorporated in a story and the kids like them.
then connecting as many words as possible to the root will expand vocabulary even more.
